Mohan Peiris to be appointed new Chief Justice |

Mohan Peiris, a former Attorney General and currently Legal Adviser to the Cabinet of Ministers will take oaths today as the 44th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. He is scheduled to be sworn in before President Mahinda Rajapaksa at 12.30pm today.President Mahinda Rajapaksa removed Sri Lanka’s chief justice from office with immediate effect on Sunday, after parliament voted to impeach Shirani Bandaranayake, Sri Lanka’s first female chief justice, on Friday.Accordingly, the Parliamentary Council, which meets this morning, with Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa in the chair, is expected to approve the appointment of Pieris as the new Chief Justice.
however The Bar Association of Sri Lanka states it would not accept the new chief justice the President intends appointing.
