The UNICEF commissioned states in its recent report that child marriages have been increased by 20%.For instance, of the 71 girls interviewed, 21 girls (30%) were pregnant before they turned 18. This is 20% higher than the national average.
It also stated that the majority of such cases were reported from rural and difficult areas of the island.

The UNICEF report states that there is a tendency of sexual harassment on the under-aged girls in the urban areas. The report states that the relevant authorities should take immediate action to educate children on the issue.
