Trade between Sri Lanka and Pakistan will reach US dollars one billion by 2014, Sri Lanka has already built a strong trade relationship with Pakistan. The Minister of Sugar Industry Development Lakshman Seneviratne expressed this view when he met Industry and Promotion Trade Minister of Pakistan, Gulam Murtasha Jatoy at the Ministry.

The annual cost of sugar imports is Rs. 60,000 million and under the management of Lanka Sugar Private Ltd, a significant improvement in sugar production has been achieved by the Pelwatta and Sevanagala factories.

After obtaining Cabinet approval to restart production at the Kantale Sugar Factory, moves are underway to find an investor and they hope to start production by early next year.
